Foreword (1)
The Centre for Malaysian Chinese Studies was established by the Chinese
community twenty years ago in what was a landmark event in the history of the Chinese
in Malaysia. The community was then faced with challenges in the areas of
politics, business, culture and education. The Centre was meant to launch a
well-programmed agenda of research and documentation of the many contributions
of the community. It is indeed befitting this pioneering role of the Centre to
commemorate and celebrate its twentieth anniversary.
In the past two decades, the Centre has followed a schedule of
activities in the pursuit of scholarly research. Over the years, it has
contributed to the promotion of cultural and historical studies as well as
deliberations of current issues pertaining to the Chinese community, and in the
publication of a growing collection of research works.
As a research organization and a cultural centre of the Chinese
community, the Centre serves both as a cultural beacon and a commitment to
future research efforts. It promotes objective academic pursuits and
enlightenment through the enrichment of intellectual content. Research work is
a long-term, cumulative and creative process. It needs adequate reference
materials as well as trained researchers. Research findings need to be
published and disseminated, and for which funding is absolutely necessary. As
Zhu Xi stated: “Wherefrom does the stream flow
sparkling bright? Only with the unending spring that brings it to life**. The
Centre will focus its energies towards the building of a cultured and caring
society through strengthening cultural developments and research. These
objectives can only be realized by injecting funding in support of the work of
the Centre. As is commonly said, ”survive a fish will not
in a pond without water”. Hence without material
support, scholarly research in efforts at cultural development is
unsustainable. With sufficient funding, it is my fervent hope that the Centre
will be able to produce the desirable results for the benefit of the community.

Foreword (2)
The Centre for Malaysian Chinese Studies, formerly known as Huazi
Resource & Research Centre Bhd., was established in 1985. In the twenty
years of its existence, funding had become a constant "bottleneck" in
its development. Despite efforts of the board of directors to grapple with the
perpetual problem of making ends meet, the results had not always been
encouraging. The Centre had once even ventured into business in an attempt to
be self-reliant. But the impact of the financial crisis of 1997 blew the good
intention out of existence.
In 1998, in a need to focus efforts on research work in keeping with
the renamed organization as a research centre, all non-academic activities were
suspended. To build up its financial resources, the Centre relied upon the
generous support of concerned individuals and organizations to raise, at the
initial stage, a proposed sum of RM2 million, of which RM1 million was to be
put into the research endowment fund and RM1 million to be used for development
purposes. Donations for the endowment were based on a minimum amount of
RM100,000. The entire capital sum was then deposited in the bank as a permanent
fund and managed by a committee. The interest accruing from the fund was to
provide funding for research work. Donations of any amount to the development
fund were also received with thanks.
The Centre had adopted a development plan to strengthen its core
function. Top priority was given to the recruitment of research staff so as to
raise the status of the Centre eventually to that of a Research Institute,
complete with separate sections devoted to research on culture, history,
economics and politics. The next emphasis was on building up the library and
its collection of reference materials for the benefit of research staffs
members and the public. The third was to undertake the publication of a
journal, magazine and books on economic, historical and cultural issues.
Lastly, efforts were made to organize international conferences and public
lectures to allow the Chinese community access to and participation in
scholarly discussions and activities. However, in view of economic and
practical constraints, not all its financial targets and research plans were
realized. Nevertheless, through the collective efforts of its board of
directors, research fellows and staffs the Centre had indeed accomplished
considerable results.
This commemorative publication is a record of the struggle of the
Centre in its past two decades. May I express my gratitude to all individuals
and organizations for their unwavering support and concern for the Centre.

Preface
The Centre for Malaysian Chinese Studies enters its twentieth
anniversary in 2005 and embarks on a new phase of its history. In the past
twenty years, the Centre has benefited immensely from the generosity of the
public, Chinese organizations and concerned individuals, whose unwavering support
has ensured its continued existence.
The existence of the Centre itself is symbolic of the spirit of the
Chinese community in its commitment to build on and enrich its cultural
heritage. The Centre therefore stands as an institution to serve the needs of
the community as an academic research centre, as an organization working for
the betterment of the community and nation, and as a bridge to greater
co-operation and understanding with the scholarly community in and outside the
country.
This Centre is the fruit of the bold and forward-looking decision of
the Pan-Malaysian Chinese Cultural Congress held in 1983. In the history of the
Chinese community in Malaysia, twenty years is indeed a short period. Yet the
creation of the Centre symbolizes the first step in the journey of a thousand
miles. Being born of the community, the Centre's role is to strive to work
towards the prosperity and welfare of society and nation.
The theme of this commemorative publication is to "evaluate its
past performance, make a prognosis of its future role, present a record of its
past, and strengthen liaison with the community**. The intention is to register
the gratitude of the Centre to the sterling contributions of its generous
supporters and benefactors in the past two decades, to provide an overview of
its record of work, activities and achievements, as well as to explore its role
in research in different areas of scholarly endeavour.
In this new phase of its existence, the Centre will have to expand its
capacity to perform. Taking inspiration from the celebrated Tang Dynasty poet
Li Bai, the Centre will “Ride the winds and waves
to bridge the deep blue seas" as a reflection on its difficult past and a
sign towards a positive attitude towards the future, in order to achieve its
ideals in research as a service to society and nation.
The Centre will strive to explore wider areas of scholarly endeavour,
strengthen liaison with the community, to widen its contributions to society
and nation, to promote efforts towards the information society, and to rely on
its own efforts in order to expand its self-reliant capacity. The Centre will
set itself to play its rightful role and achieve its stated mission of:
Gathering of Minds
Founded on Research
Bom of Society
Service to Nation
