A MESSAGE TO THE SENIOR MIDDLE Ill
GRADUATES OF
THE C.L.H.S.—DECEMBER 1918.
By MR. UM
SAIK
G1IEE.—Our Form Master
As your foim-teacher, it gives jne great pleasure t pen these few words to commemorate this auspicious occasion, namely your Graduation Buy.
In retrospect, niany and varied are the incidents, either outstanding or trival to enable you to recall your school days which have gone by. It is healthier for ou to recollect and romember the happy occasions and to forget the unpleasant ones thereby your .minds will be working constructively.
You form the third batch of post war S. M. Ill graduates of C.L.H.S. Many of you are younger in age than the two previous batches. You strike me :;.s a set, possessing a lot of spirit, enthusiasm an<l indu;,-try. Thus you have inspired me a great deal during the time wc were together thereby making the time a comparatively pleasant one. I trust this pleasant association will be ket up by your correspondence, after your departure.
A great deal can be learnt by you about each class, mate of yours during your recent excursion to th? South for you have been putting up together for quite a long stretch of time continuously. Knowing one another better will help you to understand one another better and this leads to greater co-operation. Y o u r education has failed if you bear ary ill-feeling or hatred towards any of your colleagues and this must be dispelled before you leave school.
Your graduation day marks an important period of your life for you will be leaving a kind of lifo to which all of you have become accustomed. A new life faces you in either the outside world .vhere you will start earning your living, or in colleges and universities where you will be furthering your siudies. A great deal now depends upon you in working towards your success which does not came by chance but through your own initiative, hard-work and strong will to attain it.
The shool has not failed in her duties if you are well prepared and equipped to fight against difficulties and odds in your struggle towards your goal. I trust you will not hesitate to persevere on when you .meet with obstacles or even failures and to remember this backneycd but nevertheless encouraging proverb "Failures are stepping-stones to success." The path to glory is usually hard and heart-rending; but whatever the cost, continue to forge ahead. Never dwell on past achievements but" live for the present and the future and you will continue to improve and advance.
So I close this short but sincere message with the best wishes each and everyone of you toward:; your continued progress and success in your lives, full of probabilities and possibilities, that now ie before you.

THE FLOURESCENT LAMP
By MR. 0. K. CIIEAH
Our Science Master
Wc learn in Physics that only a fraction of the energy consumed by a tungsten filament lamp is given out as light. This luminous efficiency increases with the temperature of the reaching a maximum of only about 12% and for thia figure the filament will be working near its melting point.
It has been known for many years that when an electric current is passed through a gas at low pressure light is emitted with a coloui' characteristic of the gas. This phenomenom was first used for lighting purposes in 1904 when carbon dioxide gas was used and later developed into the familiar ,neon1 signs which employed neon and mercury vapor. Apart from their low rtnciency and unsuitable colour for interior lighting these light sources had a further great disadvantage in the necessity^ for operation from a very high voltage supply. This ditnculty^was overcome by the discovery in 1927 of the emissive cathode which enabled short lamps to be operated directly from the normal mains supply. Fifteen years of improvements in the clliciency and colour in this type of lamp followed before the inodprn flouresccnt lamp came into being. To day these tubular
light sou res are fast becoming familiar in factories, ofllces. shops, restaurants ete.
A brief description hero about their construction and mechanism of operation. The envelope of those lamps consists of a glass tube into the ends of which are sealed fllanientary cathodes for leading the electric current into the lamp. During manufacture the envelope is Hlled to about 1 200 of an atmosphere with argon gas and a small globule of mecury. The argon gas is there merely to help in the starting of the discharge of the mercury vapor. At this sfage the luminous eflicicncy o f this lamp is rather less than that of a filament lamp of similar wattage and the colour rendering would be displeasing, a rather insipid blue light being given off, (the so-called low pressure mercury vapor discharge). Only a small proportion of the iniput energy is emitted as visible light about 5% or so, the bulk of the remainder being wasted as heat, infra-red and ultra-violet radiation. To convert the ultra violet radiation, which otherwise would be absorbed by the glass tube into useful light, some flourescing .materials must be employed. We are already familiar in Chemistry with the fact that when ultra-violet radiation falls on certain substances classified as 'phospors* they glow with characteristic light. These substances are in effect converting the ultra-violet radiation into visible light and are said to be floures-cin^. Two typical flourescing substances suitable for use in these lamps are .magnesium tungstate, which flouresces a pale blue colour and zinc beryllium silicate, flourescing a pinkish colour. They are prepared in the form of fine white crystalline powders and if now the inside wall of a low pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp is coated with a suitable mixture of these two powders a very substantial gain of some seven times in light output is obtained and the light emitted from the lamp will be of a daylight colour giving excellent colour rendering.
It is interesting to bring out a comparison between such a flourescent lamp and the older and more familiar tungsten filament Ixuiip. A lamp of the.former type of the 80 watt rating is about 5 ft. long and 1% inches in diameter and gives about three times the light output and has a life three times long as that of n tungsten flla.ment lamp of similar wattage.

CHUNG LING HIGH SCHOOL TOUR-1948
By MR. WILLIAM R. WARD
(Our History blaster)
Dornford Yates in his book 'The Berry Scene* has, for his prologue, a perfect reproduction of scries of exchanges between Berry Pleydell and his Foran Master, n .man of the rarest wit. The following is one of them.
"One morning Berry, who had Loen requested to translate a assage from Juvenal, stumbled through a line and a half and then stopped dead.
'Go on, Pleydell.1
Berry looked up apologetically.
Tm sorry, sir, but the English equivalent of the next phrase has for the moment escaped one.,
'Can you construe?*
'I — I don't believe I shall do the satirist justice this morning, sir.' Tomorrow perhaps.................,
'The artistic temperament?*
'You're very understanding, sir?
'I am. You hoped for the best/
*1 still do, sir?
,Optimjst. Write it out twice.1
•Very good, sir.'
'And I Know your cousins handwriting?
Berry sighed."
I mention that because this morning I feel a good deal of sympathy with Berry. Somehow I do not think I shall do this Tour justice. Tomorrw perhaps...............But it has to be done today. Too many
times already^have I done that very thing I have too often complained of others doing........... I hive not
got my work done by the day stated. I can, at any rate, plea, when the deficiencies in my effort at doing justice to the Tour have become obvious, that I have already done my imposition; for I have written this out not twice, but many, many times! and still do not seem to have got any nearer a better translation of the spirit of that Tour into words and phrases fit to be included in this Magazine as an article contributed by a teacher of .English. (And I give due warning now that if any pupil of mine should ever produce as ungainly and complicated n sentence as that last one, I shall put my pen through it and add the short but telling word 'clumsy*.)
But now I sec that struggling through that introductory paragraph has done some good. Tc thing that was worrying me all along and which made my previous efforts so bad, was that I could not make up my mind how'to tackle this question of the tour. "How shall I write it?” I shouted in my sleep. (So my wife tells me ) "Ho、v shall I write it?" I breathed into my bowl of food, as I cooled it in order to be able to swallow it in the only two minutes I had for tiffin. And now I know. Write the spirit of it! ship the f!Lcta except where they serve a very useful purpose to demonstrate the spirit. Take a leaf out of Drinkwater's philosophy and address your remarks, not to the fact-loving kind but to those '-who chensh courtesy with their fellows at the gate" and know that there is little irorc to life than sucli things as that.
Having decided to skip the facts. I had better mention the few that will have to be found room for somehow From the 14th to the 22nd of .June 1948, one bus load and two car loads of pupils and leach er- of Chung Ling High School toured Malaya, from Penang to Malacca and back via Cameron Highlands We COvered altogether one thousand three hundred and sixty nine miles without let or hindrance. W< called at and visited Taiping, Ipoh Kuala Lumpur, Sereniban, Malacca Poit Dickson (via Pedas), Morib, Klang, Tapah Cameron Highlands, Tanjong Rambuttan and everywhere in tetewen. Wc had one casualty; we endured n continual shortage of bathrooms and lavatories; we visited more, Schools than was interesting; met with mor。kindliness nnd hospitality than wc deserved; and saw neither gangster, ambush nor re-volution We did, however, have two or three punctures, and the perpetually recurring stretches of torn up roads (under repair) tore our synthetic tyres to a patternless smoothness which raminds ua of the tour everv dav by screeching on every corner that we go round at more than twenty-flve miles an hour. (Wnch is all Of them') Wo received courtesy from all \ve met save one who. since he was n Senior OHIcia (of sorts) in the Education Department, should have known better. (Details of this incident will be supplied in confidence to anv Government Officer who is sufficiently interested to be offended by the remark.) We returned much better friends than we set out, which, after all is the touchstone of a successful tour. The onlv time our spirits got a trifle fniyed was when we arrived at Tanah Rata to find that another sniall naZv frem Chuns Ling School had cashed in to their advantage and to our disadvantage by reaching hc Hotel' two hours before us and using their membersCTp of the School to confuse the Proprietor re-„_rdlnir the reservations. This resulted in some of our number having to share another Hotel with same Mdics "of doubtful origin, doubtful intentions and still .more doubtful manners. Their vulgarity proved too much for one of our number and lie succumbed
— 12-
We enjoyed the most perfect weather throughout the tour. Not once did it rain; not once did it anything else but shine. And yet, withal, there was a breeze to ease the heat of the sun and we suffered no burn from it. We took our food in the cool of the caves at Ipoh and titillated our palates with deceptive vegetarianism. We bathed in a stream at the roadside when we were engaged in belting along the longest strip between stopping places. We sat by the fire and quaffed a friendly glass high in the hills. We dipped our tourist fingers in the hot-springs. We bathed in the sea at Port Dickson by aioonlight. We stood in silence before the Memorial to the Indian Beach Landing Group which put ashore at Morib a considerable nujnber of men, machines and supplies several days after the Japanese had surrendered. (However, in years to come people will not remember in \vhich order the two events happened. So let* the anemoriai standD We stood in silence, thia time in reverent silence, at the foot of the Memorial to the Chinese who were massacred by the Japanese in Malacca. We saw rubber shoes and tyres be*ng made; biscuits emerging from a lengthy jnechanical baking, hot, slightly brown and looking far more appetising than they do when displayed in large glass bottles with painted metal lids (rusty on the inside) in the shops of Penang Road. We took photographs; posed for photographs; sought out parties of pupils from other Schools (not subject to the same dull monotony of being for boys only) and took their photographs. In fact there was a definite brightening up of our spirits at one point when we finally tracked down one such party in the Lake Gardens in Kuala Lumpur which we thought we had lost track of.
On the whole, I'm inclined to think it might be a good idea another year to arrange the tour when parties of'schoolgirls are not also on the roatf. ,We might be able to keep our ^ninds jnore on the business in hand. They were a distraction. A pleasant enough distraction, sure enough, but nevertheless a distraction. Up to the present Chung Ling and Fukien Schools are not housed in the same building in Penang. And I see little point in arranging tours so that parties from the two schools wind up in a small village like Tanah Rata at the same time. The place isn^t big enough. It is only personal opinion, but I nomehow feel that boys rather lose their manliness when they go scampering around after girls. Let the girla wait until later on when our days as student are done and we have time for the weaker sex, it being an cle-mantary principle of mathematics that a plils^and a minus make a.........minus!
Blsewhere in this issue there will doubtlessbe a proper list of those to whom we owe onuch for their kindness and hospitality to ub during the tour. To them is due milch more than our thanks. I would like to mention them all here; but I fear to do it least I should inadvertantly omit one. And that would be a henious crime! However, I iriUst try for surely rarely did anyone owe so much as my wife gd I on this tour. These then, are those I remember. If I have forgotten any, may they forgive my failing memory and not blame an ngrateful heart. The Old Boys who gave us lunch at Ipoh; Yu Boon and his family in Kuala Lumpur; Mr. Cheeseman and Mr. Laidlaw; Mr. Chen's friend, Mr. Choong; Yong Peng*s parents and their friends at Port Dickson; the teacher in Malacca who showed us round hia town with-so much pride and intetesting information; the Military Authorities who allowed us into their Cinema; Pak Choon and his family, all te Head Teachers, Factory Owners, Government Officials and others who allowed us to visit their Schools, factories and Offices; and the Police for not searching any of the buses at road-blocks and so allowing ub speedier passage.
One other tale remains to ho told. NotKing was of more interest; nothing more worth while than our visit to tc Hamphil Nurseries. Fortunately we had been to the Government Agricultural School earlier in the Tour. We had seen the students, their class-rooms, laboratories experimental fields and so on. At the Ramphil Nurseries we met a young man who had been through that course before the war and whn is now putting into practice all that he learnf. To walk with him round his gardens, to hear him talk to ask him questions, was something more than an education. It was an inspiration. It was no less good than Tanner's Glory*. And those of us who are ploughing a steady, but slightly laborious furrow throughthat book, suddenly saw light. Looking back, collecting that morning, it is difficult to remember that the young man did not write Fanner*8 Glory. He might well have done. His knowledge of farming is certainly no less keen than Street's. His love of the soil no less real. His determination no Tess firm. His inventiveness no less clever. His story-teliing no less delightful. If only his pen wer& as slick and from it. In yeas to come would roll such pages as Street can write. -Maybe tliat will happen.
My tale is told. I turn to my bed for an afternoon siesta profoundly grateful my 弟cep will not be disturbed by the indiscriminate bowling of an amateur saxophonist nor by the shrieks of girlish mirth from a bus load of school-gilr tourists next door. (Although my wonted calm has been somewhat disturbed by the moving in of a large family ot rubber-tappers into a shed within fifty yards of my restwhile quiet abode. Do all rubber-tappers produce only girls in such large numbers? Is there something about the occupation which tends to produce femininity? threeb itches have already demonstrated their jealous objection by barking for hours on und at these intruders. I wish that T could bark! To think that* now, In all probability, in the morning when life is at its lowest, I shall have to say gotSd-lnoming at least oight times to a carriage -full of young ladies! Perhaps I shall be saved by their catching* nn earlier train than I do.)

ini.fl.ffi足互相关联的。

MUSIC
By OOI THIAM HOCK
uMusic is the art of combining sounds in a manner agreeable to the ear**......J. J, Rousseau.
°Music is the link which connects the spiritual with the sensuous life. It is a higher revelation than wisdom and philosophy1*........Van Beethoven.
**I consider music not merely as an art to please the ear, but as one of the most powerful means of moving the heart and exciting feelinga"...... C. W. Von Glvck.
From these sayings, wo tlnd that a proper and correct statement defining music is an impossibility, as, up to the present, an appropriate, adequate and perfect definitton has not yet been formulated, even by the greatest and most renowned musicians, although thifl branch of art has flourished for quite a long time. Though a sunpie and single definition fails to give an approximate and exact idea of the nature of music,: yet from the abovo sayings, we will, however, at least say that music is an art which combines sounds ac-; cording to the laws of music composition, penetrates the senuous feel:ngt stimulates the inner soul with pleasure, ourage, anxiety, worry or sadness and humanises the non-sensuous thought.
■ - Music Is the *art of sounds, but the crying of children, the explosion of shells, the thundering of bombs, the roaring of railway engines and other obstreperous noises cannot be considered as music, because they are clamorous and noisy. But the sound -oF skin-made drums played by Negroes in the dark continent of Africa at dancing Is musical, for It has been produced according to time, high and low tones, as well as' having rhythm. Even tho Tibetans, the Sakals and seme other uncivil:sed people have their own music. They play on their simple and traditional musical instruments, which seem to be ridiculous and funny, but they enjoy them. You must have came across, especially in India, frem experience or picture that Indian pipers make use of their pipes to draw the attention from snakes in putting up their heads, when tho plpors blow. This Is not magic but the attractive power of Dlusic.
No doubt, music id a.n art, bur it is different from all other branches of art, Such as drawing, anyone can straight away appreciate and criticise the value of it; whereasjmuaic cannot be appreciated in this way. For the sake of harmony, music requires three types of persons—the composers, the players and the listeners. Lack of any type of them, it will not do. There is no difference between a sheet of music paper, which- may consist.of rich contents, and a blank paper, if the music is not played out; and We, the listeners, cannot appreciate or even feel the emotional feelings. Then, the imusjc papers are simply pieces of black and white, notes-and«stems weaving articles. A great number of famous composers can play their own works with dexterity and express them with affection, yet, their playing is short-lived, because" they are mortal. Sof if there no one to play thoir compositions out, when they died, their compositions will lose lustre and became valueless.
Music is the bulwark of Hre. It follows steadily with the advancement of human civilisation and coordinates in every walk of human life. A show without inusic becomes dull and uninteresting and not entertaining. Imagine how happy a family will be, if there is someone playing the piano, vidnn, guiter or other instruments to furnish amusement. In battlefields^ how brave and active the fighting services an-•Bwered to the call of military bands and the bugles. In sctiools, students joyfully clamouring tho advent of music teachers Is another proof of the attractive poweiFand the v&lue of music. In hospitals, especially at the tuberculosis wards, antennas have been erected and radio seta have been installed to furnish the patients with music. At asylum, music will relieve temporarily the lunatics from mania and stop them from rough and rude behaviour for a short time. With the advancement of .modern science *&nd the im* .provement in music, it might, in the future, completely and permantly hoal maniac with its smoothing effect harmonious sounds, thus stand out proudly and gloriously in histoiy of physic.
SUCCESS
By CHAN KAIYAU
About a century ago, Emily Dickinson, the daughter of a rich man, when she was young* she was very happy. But' a great sorrow befell her at the dawn of womanhood and from that very day she lived as a hermit, meeting nobody, going nowhere.
She wrote many peomsf and one of which was written as follow:
• "Success ia counted sweetest By those who ne'er succeed, Not one of all the purple host Who took the Held tojiay Can tell the victory. As, he, defeated, dying, On whose forbidden ear The distant strains of triumph Break agonised and clear?*
She knew what exactly was meant by the .memorable piece "Them la only one thing sadder than a defeat and that ia a victory?* The surviving soldier never feels so piercinglytso overwhelmingly, the meaning Of victory, as his dying comrade who hears the bugles blowing afar off, and knows th'tfT ha will never return to his father's house..
ishe meant something much more striking than this obvious fact of the battlefield. She was think-. Ing not of the battlefield, but of the wide-world, where for years people of every profession^ claw, fortune and nation, have stniggled and strained for auccess. What did she mean by the first two verses? Can it be true that the failures of life know more about success than those who have won its chief prizes If so, here is food for thought.
Lord Beaconsfield was asked whether he was satisfied with the fames and*.lionours he had gained by his long struggle, he just muttered" >Dreams.....dreams.......dreams!" Lord Clive of Plassey was a
very active and successful man when he waa young, but he died a miaeratile death. Sir S. Baffles of Singapore had lived a glorious life, but was deserted and uncared for when he was old. We know of many other succeasful people that old age brought no happiness to their lives but rather the contrary; they c€anplain of unrest and disappointment. On the other hand, there are many, who seam to be' failures, are reaUy sue* cessful persons.
Success is by no means another word for happiness. Life is not so simple a matter that you can divide the world into rich and poor and say the rich are happy and the poor sorrowful. Nor life is so foolish a thing that you can make one happy by sticking a flower in his coat, or another unhappy by taking a feather out of his hat. Some of the most .wretched people on earth are ,<8uccesafulM milUonaireff, 8ome of the happiest are merely poor and humble folks, of wham history does not tell.
Success lies in happiness, which again lies in desire and work. No earthly reward can ever satisfy the craving for success, as well as to try to comfort a hungry dog with a flower or a picture. To long for success means that the heart has set its affections on the unattainable, which the world can never give and that is satisfaction. If the world is perfect and satisfactory, life would have no problems and become dull, monotonous and meaninglesa. No one can find happiness in idling nor can anyone long be plea-gan in enjoyment. It is true that we find happiness only when we are striving and aspiring. If success is a deceiver, why strive hard after it? Why won't we sit a till and aim at the serenity
of spriit? All these confusions vanish if we carry on our thinking. What are we living for?
Now that the answer ia becoming more and more certain. From human experience, men found out
that there is nothing great on earth save Man, and nothing great In man save Mind. Well, if mind ia the
great thing nothing can satisfy us. But what does belong to^the mind? Knowledge, and what does know-,ledge do to the .mind? It enables it to grow in wisdom, IF power, and in beauty. The answer to our question is clear. Why are we living? To grow in knowledge. Only knowledge can be kept by us and nobobdy can rob it away from us. With knowledge, we may help others and live wisely, even beautifully.
Briefly then there is only one success worth striving after, and that is to develop our minds. With this intention, we can devote ourselves to jnental growth and spiritual development, and we shall nover be tempted by the earthly rewards. One's happiness will lie in the knowledge that we are growing and will understand better what Jesus Christ saya "工 am came that they might have life, and that th% might have it more abundantly.M

Although thia crying is not recognised by men as a sort of language* yet it contains feeling.- So we can say that man is by nature a speaking anhnal? t
Man cannot live isolately. So long ago man has united to form a society, for the purpose of living, Now, language is the strongest and most available instrument that c&n consolidate society.. Frofax this we -t see the importance of speaking. It h conspicuous that to communicate orally is much warmer and jnore convenient than with letters. Referring to history, we can find that the main factor of disunity of India and Burope la the disunity of languages. Moreover, the chaos and disorder of the present world' fe partly due to it. If the world's language Ksperando can be known to the whole world: then, human beings with the assistance of the convenience of the communication can understand one another better. As a result, there will be everlasting peace and happin^&s in the world. '
Speech gives great assistance in our happy Hfe and enterprises. Living in this world, we cannot avoid: social activities. If one of your friends requests you to join a festival on which you were asked to give a speech, and if you are not a keen speaker, your nature is aoUtary, you detest speaking, you will certainly feel very unhappy to attend. On the contrary, If you are r lover of speaking, not only you will be happy in attending social activities but also you will enjoy throughout your life, as you can express what you want to say and let your jnind remain undisturbed. Speaking is just the same as the outward appearance of a .man. With a' tidy dressing, good demeanour and a handsome look, you can give a deep and good impression to othera. With a fluent and reasonable speech you can also impress otfier people deeply. Most of the men always liRe to apprise other people immediately after staying with him just for a short while. They think wrongly that the outward appearance, behaviour, speaking and so on can almost entirely represent what la inside a body. So if yu are not a keen speaker, you will always give a first impression that bad. As a result, you will fail in your enterprise. For instance, you are not available to face an oral examination given by the manager or some one ih charge when you intend to find a job in a company. On hearing your b站 answer, he will reject your application. On the other hand, fine speaking will help you a great deal. Your fluent speech \will attract other people's notices. Whenever you are in need of th皿,you will get assistance from the^n more easily.
Considering what is stated, it is indispensable for every one to become a good speaker. But most of the failttres fail not because of inability but because of having no interest in it. So in case you want to be a Keen"speaker, you must cherish rich interest in speaking first. We must proceed In two ways in order to have Intense interest. First, we must collect as much substance of speaking as possible. That ist we onust have a lot of knowledge. Speaking is the same as doing business. The greater the amount of money you Invested, the greater the amount of)naoney you will earn. In the same way, the richer the knowledge you have, the longer and better you can speak. To a country folk, you should speak about something that Is simple and easily comprehensible. To a literary man, you should talk something that is complex and profound. All this knowledge, we can obtain by readixig. Secondly, we must keep up the courage to speak. This means that you should not be afraid of being unable to speak well. Try to speak as much as you can and as slowly as possible to assure that your speech is heard clearly. Then as time goes on your speaking will become clearer, faster, and melodious. Also, your^courage will become greater and greater. With abundant substance and great courage of speaking, you will like to converse with other people. By and by, your interest in speaking increases.
〜 There are many great men in the world who are good speakers like Winston ChurcKill, Franklin liobsevelt and H. Hitler. Supposing you have the ambition of becoming a great man, I advise you lo learn and practise from now onwards to become an expert speaker.

A HAPPY SUNDAY ;
• , JBy CHDSW IN CHEOH
Having worked very hard these few days both in school works and in other acUvitiea, we thought; it necessary to have some jnerrijnent for relaxation. For thio purpose, Wood Chee suggested to cycle to the reservoir and to the Chinese Swimming Club on the coming Sunday morning. This suggestion waa gladly accepted by all and immediately some boys were appointed to prepare bread and to see to all that, were to be done.
On that morning, I Hlied my stomach with •char-bee-hoon' and cycled to Woon Chee's lodging at Kam-pong Bahru where those who live at Ayer Itam all assembled and at 8 a.m. we went on our way to the crossroads near Macalister Road to meet those who live in George Town. Soon eight fellowa including a cameraoxian led by Kheng San were seen to approach. When the two groups met there were greetings and joking? mixed with loud laughters and we formed a single party and cycled to. the reservoir. Along the road we joked, sang and laughed and because we numbered not le8a than fifteen perspns, we attract^ ed much attention of the people on the road-sfdes. Soon the road became narrow and we h^d to cycle with all our strength to ascend the slope. The jests ceased and none could laugh. It waa hard for 职tty Wai Fun, who, with his mouth widely opened was panting and his slilrt soaked with sweat thoroughly could but cried, uAfter allr this is not a pleasant task. It nearly costs my life! I would rather go the X^ut-laws, at Odeon." Samebody said, ^Surely Fatty will lose some pound's weight for his perspira: tig." All laughed and 'Wai Fun could do nothing but laughed also. Fortunately the sun was mild and cold wind blew from the woods, otherwise Wai Fun would suffer much more. Finally we reached our destinaUon and all troubles were forgotten. There were already some people. Wg took some"snapshots and scattered about. Chen Tan was seen hopping and running here and there like a jnorikey. He was warned not to jump into the reservoir to swim. There were neither curious things nor was there any damsel to be seen. So we decided to go to the Chinese Swimming Club for an early swim. This, time we had to glide down a steep and dangerous slope. Everyone was warned to glide slowly and to see that his brakes were in good condition. Though the gliding waa thrilling yet it was like flying. Thiam Hock was unlucky enough to slip and he tumbled. Though it did not take his life yet his face, hands and knees were wounded. He had to be carried by Keng San on his bicycle io the Swimming Club to have his ^oundo temporarily dressed by Keng San and afterwards he was sent to hospital.
There were not many people in the Club. Our arrival aeemed to break the silence. At once we got Into action. Some ordered coffee and tea quench their thirst and others went and changed into ' their swimming costumes. The sun was favourably mild and the sea was temptingly smooth. We were rather sad when we looked about to find no mermaids in two-pieces except some old ladies kicking water with their cihtldren and husbands near the shore.' ■'However, we rolled on the 'shore until our bodies were covered with a layer of sand, and then one by one we leaped into the water and played hide-and-seek. Wai Fun was advised hot to swim far out the shore lest he might be dragged ashore with a belly-full of sea-water which is rather unpleasant to drink. Fatty himself knew it enough and he did but crawl like a tortoise in the shallow water. Naughty Chen Tan who learned swimming a few months ago was daring enough to swim out to tho diving stand but I guessed that he surely bad swallowed some mouthful of seawater. Soon it was noon and all of us got out of water 'to take tiffin. Slices of bread were placed on tho-table rea4y to be swallowed and the curry beef which waa cooked by Keng San's mother was very appetizing One, two go! all got into action together and soon the bread disappeared as was being swept. Everyone filled his mouth with bread and none could utter a word. After much eating or rather ewallowing, we fell into idle talks. Some of us even went as far as the recent election of vice-president in China At that time Pak Choon Ie4 hfs sisters and brothers into the Club. They numbered eight or more and wo were sorry that we had neither biead no curry to feed them. Well, when people gradually increased and some mermaids appeared, we took to the sea again. The tide was at its highest and so was our interest though now and then some water was forced into our .mouths and nostrils. Fatty fetched us a foot-ball from somewhere and we began to play water>polo. The ball was throw n wildly and occasionally it fell right on the crowns of some people. In the sea, young and old, male and female were equally sporting. Chen Tan on Chin Min's shoulders fought with Liang Hui on Tung Wah's The two fell, giving a great laughter. Then jnore fightings began and several snapshots were taken by Woon Cheo on the shore. It was tBe middle of tho day and the sun radiated its heat freely and we felt our skulls being expanded. So we hid our bodies under water and exposed only our heads on the surface of the water. It was a strange sigBt to see hairy heads^Tloating over the water.
It was not until half-past two when we felt a little cHlll that we came up to dress. My companies all cycled to the Waterfall Gardens but I had some tasks at hand and so I went my own way. Nevertheless, it was the happiest Sunday I ever had. Moreover I discovered the friendly spirit in life.

A BOOK
By CHOW CHENG TAN
Howard Fast, a famous American writer, haa been arrested by Un-American Activity Committee not long ago. I have been reading one of his novels the ^lYeedom Road" written during the second world vrar. Here I am going to write a few words on this book, but it Is not a review of this book.
The story of this book Is about a negro, Gideon Jackson, who came back from the civil war the war of Salvation, to his village—in South Carolina—wltfi a cheerful heart, and was elected as a representative of. the State Convention to .make a new constitution. Though h© was illiterate, knowing nothing, yet he had a young and humane heart; bo hc started to learn.by himself from this new birth democratic so* G)ety; he learned more and more and knew more and more. Therefore in this Convention he too gave his opinion on seeking the equality among the Black and the White. After this Conventionfhe came home with a new dream, the dream which could actually^e carried out, that every Black would hav© his own land, and equal rights. Therefore hc united all the Blacks and the poor Whites of his village to buy tlwl; own land. He became a Congressman later on, a well-known fighter for liberty of the world. Ho WBver, the landlords in the South, sUll wished to maintain their plantations, and estates, and to enslave the Blacks and the poor Whites forever. By peaceful and constitutional means they could not regain their previleges; so, they organized a party called Ku Klux Klan, by means of terror, such as killing and murdering not only the Black, but also the White who stood on the same side with the Black; and burnt their vill ages. Gideon Jackson and the people of hia village were all Riled under such condition; they all lost their lives in trying to fight for freedom and equality.
This Is an historical novel, which is written on the subject that Is never known to us from history goks. This subject Is a^act which is always hidden behind the beautiful cloak of American history.
As the author wrote in “An Afterward" that "not only were material fhing wiped out and people slain, but the very fnemory was expunged" And this Ku Klux Klan and their horrible actions are still practised* until now. To those who are stUl dreaming of democracy and liberty, equality in the U.S.A., £his book can serve as a bell to wake them up from their beaivtiful dreams. To those who are doubtful of what democracy can do to a person, thia book can show him the example of how an iinterate Black became a great fighter for freedom only because democracy had educated him.
The style of the writing of this book is jnerely to reiale the story plainly. It cannot be compared with the wonderful style of Dickens In “A Tale of Two Cities.” Nevertheless, it can catch your noUon, and your sentiment as the story goes on. What is written in thia book, is actually true, which was and sUll .Is ac-tually happening in the Unifed States. The facta oY this book catch your sentiment in8tead of the style.
If the 玩Ok is written with complete facts, and the author does not take pain in sculpturing the m ft, then this book cannot be considered ias a succesaful one. It becomes rather dull and dry; it * becomes a photograph of that time of that events but not an art a literature and a novel. Aa to -,Frcedom Roadr, this book there are no such mistekes. It is not merely a reproduction of true events, but it also succeeded in creating, sculpturing the types of persons, the outstanding characters. Such as Gideon Jack* (Jn thlg book'Ts a typical Black. There are many Gideon Jacksons in the United States now and then; these Gideon Jacksons one after another fight for freedom and liberty.
This book bears both literary merit and social merit. This ia a book always worth reading.
THE SCOPE FOR ADVENTURE IN MODERN LIFE
By LIOE TJOK YAT
Every minute of time, every cent and every power of men has never been wasted at presei^ when BGOnie realize fully its value to estoblish and create whatever they can that they think is w?甲1 也皿 * is gootTto do so and that Is our duties too, to express our mental abilities. Though it is
conquer Nature yet at least we can make use of it to overcome all the difficulties in our 地岛了 £岩 greMinadein this twentieth century 18 the greatest if compared with the previous centuries^ 骨鹫:碧 Md towns have been established, more trades and factories have been built, and more 弋瞟贳:盅恶F have been introduced. It is so prosperoua now that even some countries have really became. li«urtous. Therrfore reputation Is what they are anxiously thinking of and money is what they are crazily seeking for. They do even know it Ts'dangerous but they risk their .lives.
3^any capitalists make tbelr commorcial speculation by storing goods, buying gold and silver and building theatres, parks, cabarets and many other things. They are sure to make money they think to themselves unless the conditions are unexpectly changed.
Scientists who spend all their life Ln laboratories are working days and nights and hoping that they can succeed to invent or discover something.. Their risks if fortunate will succeed. Recently political activities have been carried out in Malaya by the terrorists. They attack the police stations, murder the estates' managers, rob the small villages and plan to overthrow the Government This risk is bad and to be prevented.
Thus the competing result Ln modern life makes little scope for adventure, because nearly all kinds of profitable Business and jobs are occupied by those who are highly educated, rich and powerful. If on the ;■ contrary, the scope for adventure in modern life is great and can be easily found, then there will be no poor people, no war and no revolution. For no one is going to have any conflict when everyone has his ■ life happy and peaceful.
just looking back to the ancient time when everything was so simple and humble, people earned their living without any difficulties. They never thought much of planning to win the monopoly of trade and less competition had token place in seeking fortune. So the scopes for adventure at that time wore naturally more; because a small sum of money and a little skill were enough to make your fortune well.
But since we are bom in this modern age, we should therefore be able to chase up to receive high education and have special skill, otherwise with little knowledge we shall have no scope for adventure and even rio chance in this world.
SOUVENIRS
By FOO HUO YIEN
The vicissitudes of men are like clouds In the sky. Sometimes they are blown by winds into different directions, and samellmes they form different 涌apes within a few minutes. The vlciasitudes of Jnen change according to their circvunstances. In our childhood wo have many little friends who played and learned A, B, C with ust but now, some of them have become merchants, some of them had died, and we are still students in a high school. Owing to the differences in circumstances, we have departed from one another. It Is said that <(Far from sight results In far.from mind” and wo may one day forget our friends. Oh, how pathetic it is to think of forgetting old friends! In order to prolong our remembrance, we have to exchange souvenirs with one another. From the cradle to the grave man's life is not short. During such a long period, remembrance of kindn«>ss of friendship of departed friends is an invaluable consolation. So the preciousness of souvenirs is clearly shown!
"everything may be sent as souvenir, but most of them, are photographs and books. Photographs and books are the best things in perpetuating remem袖ng. A man's photo represents his f^ure as well as his character. From these two things we can recall his habit and* his friendliness towards us. The sending of books as souvenirs is also good. Though'they can not remind you of the givers figure, they remind you of the giver's wish towards you. If you are sent a volume of the Holy Bible, it means that your friend wishes you to be a good Chriatlan. If you are sent a book written by Voltaire or Tolstoy, it is a wish that you will be a revolutionist fighting for freedom and humanity. So, it takes a loiiJrConsideration to choose books as souvenirs to friends.
It is not supposed that souvenirs should be costly. It should be things fit for both sides. Sometimes when we are to send souvenirs to a friend of our native land in our own countxy, a handful of sand from the native soil is more precious than gold rings. It implies that he must not forget his native Tanfl. In the picture *A song to remember* we have seen that the ffreat musician Chopin was flent a handful of his native sand enclosed in a handkerchief by his sister on the eve of his departure. This handful of sand enabled him to remember his youth, his father's family and his country when he was sick In bed In a foreign country. How precious was his confession, of the love of his sister that he ahedded tears!

We, our classmates, have came* from various parts of the world and assembled here in the school we are leaning. *We have passed two and a half years of our school days together here. We played, we leran-together and everything that we have done, links our friendship firmly and joyfully. But there is & \time for us to depart, and the time h^s come' at last. That is the day of our graduation: HIs It possible :?or all of us to go into the same line and enjoy lUe together in future as we have done the school?" ?This queation has drawn our attention io make something to record our. graduation day, and we have determined to publish a souvenir magazine as other graduation cleisses had done before. So far. the souvenir .^magazine is the best memento. In the maffazine we have not only our photographs published, but also wQ can write down our wishes and hopes for the future after the graduation. Our articles in the magazine will show us in future whether we have improved in our writing at that time compared with the writing of our school days.
As a man can not keep all events in his life unchanged, .«very event is worth remembering after its di&nge. We have lived together at one time, but we cannot do so th roughtout our life. Souvenirs are orthy because they help us to recall past events.
POLITICS SHOULD BE INTRODUCED INTO SCHOOL
ByHUUANGHUI
It has been said that man is by nature a political animal. Here we are able to see very clearly the Important connection of politics to man. No one will deny that the prosperity or corruption of a country depends most on the practice of its politics. That is to say that if the politics of a country is badt the people would suffer. On the other hand, if a country has a good practice of its good policy (concerning with politics), it would able to march on to its hopeful new age of prosperity. These few points mentioned here show us the importance of politics.
Some would say that students should not learn politics. Nb other ideas seem to me worst than this indeed. We notice that students especially Chinese students in China, have shown their wisdom, in knowing politics, because students always have objective views. They look at a thing always from an objective angle, the right point of view. ThifiTWill sametUncs be quite different from, those politicians who often have their own prejudices. It has been proved in China that students learning politics does not suffer in .loss but benefits.
On the 4th of May, 1919, China started a glorious reform movement now known as "4th May Movement" which has been considered t be one of the best .movements so far occurred in China. The main purport of this xnovement was to oppose the invasion of jingoism, and It had been done quite successfully, because by this movement, not only the Chinesa have seriously wakened up and checked the invasion, but, there was one more Important change in China, that Ts the Chinese Literature had greatly changed. It had changed to a new stage—a hopeful stage! We may imagine that if the Chinese Literature did not change from, its old stage to the new stage by this movement, now we are still unable to gather new know-ledge in school. While the Westerners are making atomic bomba, the Chinese still do not know what is atom. How pitiful it la! But, this movement had already changed the Literature of China and also changed the winds of the Chinese. It has written a glorious page in our history.. Here, we must not forget that the resolute supporters and the brave warriors of this movement were students. They are the corner atones of society, the vanguards' oT reformation!
Thus, we realize .that students knowing politics is not bad as some people say. In fact, they should jeam and know politics, (here by no means taking parts In politics) and therefore "Politics should be Introduced into school" is reasonable..
AN IDEAL HOME
By WU CHOOK YING
..nixmi Sweet hcune! There is no place like home so sweet and charming to imu The expreasion ^ast,pr West, Home-is best' reminds us how lovely a house is. Seeing our sweetheart with a smiling face, accompanied by two healthy children standing at the distant gate to receive us wTien we are on the way, our tired mindsbodies will.soon relax It is then we feel that life is pleasant and .happy.
> ,
A happy"home is essential to us when we are to dnaintain a peaceful mind so that we can succeed. An ideal home does not mean a luxurious manaion. bjit a peaceful environment which invites relaxation. It is as foolish as to buy happiness in a store when we think that money only can make an ideal home.
The selection of the site is almost as important as the selection of the design of the fiouse. It' should be sitixated near the countryside remote from the business section and the industrial area so that it Sb free from dirt, dust, smoke, unpleasant smell and noisy traffic. At the same time, proximity to bus stop desirable to avoid unnecessary waste of time and inconvenience.
Two or three children In a home would always ,make it more lively. Their "healthy bodies and their cheerful disposition are invaluable consolations to the parants. The surroundings play an important part upon these effects. So the community In Hie neighbourhood* is worth considering. They should live harmoniously.
We shall now turn to the house Itself which should maintain a little garden where flowers are beautifully planted. This not only will .make the view of the house lock preftier but also during our * recess time we may spend a little time to appreciate the pleasant atmosphere of the garden. We ourselves may act as gardeners and even grow some vegetables dudng our free tinie. It is a pleasant thing to onjoy the product produced By our own hands however cheap it may be.
In the house it Is better to place sknple furniture and try to havft three or moro different ways of arrangements once a while» so that things Fill appear comfortable and new. A comfortable reading room, is essential. An hour or two of reading before going to bed is a merry pastime.
Home, Sweet home! It !s not only a happy rest for the health but also & memory and dreaming placo for a wanderer lyin^ sick in a foreign land.
PERSEVERANCE ,
By LOH HOOI TONU
, • -
Perseverance means steadfastness in purpose; it is the very hince of all virtues, and it is one* of the most important elemnnta in the character of a great man. - ■
One who perseveres will came out better than those who do not. Success is usually the result of perr severance. Many great heroes, w« read from history, are venerated by their countrymen, simply because they possessed an iron will and steady effort. Dr, Sun Yabeent the father of the Chinese Republic, had set us free from the Manchurian rule by his Inflexible perseverance which enabled him to stick tc the cause in spite of his failure and the death of his followers, and Anally, he made the revolution of 191]-也 success. President Chiang Kai-ahek had saved our country from being ruined by the Japanese through a period of eight years of long and hard struggle. Had he not possessed the power of perseverance China would not have been what it is today. Abraham Lincoln would never have become so famous in history had he not persevered in the working for the abolition of slavery. From all points of view, wa 8ee that perseverance is undoubtedly the basis of success and glory.
The man who is always hegitatlng which of the two things he will do first, will do neither. The man who does not resolve, and fluctuate from one opinion to another, and veers like a weather-cocK to every point of the compass, with every breath of caprice that blows, can never achieve even a tiny matter It is only the man, who flrat thinks carefully, then decides firmly, and then puts his purpose into practice with inflexible perseverance—that can accomplish a great task. Remember, even a small brook will carve out for itself deep and wide channel Aimply by flowing constantly; a rptder will be able to spin a web for itself In the 'stormy weather1 when it perseveres. •
It is always the case that in doing things, there are .more or less difficulties and barriers, especially in the beginning. The greater the greater the piece of work ia, the more the difficulties and the higher the barriers are. It is at that time that decides a jnan's fate or future. If he perseveres, he will reach the gate of success; not otherwise.
Mencius, one of the moat remarkable, philosophers in Chinese history, said, "When heaven is about to confer a great office on any man, it will first execise hte mind with suffering, and his sinews and bones wth toil. It will expose hia body to hunger, and subject him to extreme poverty, it will confound all his understandings. By all these, it stimulates his mind, consolidates His character, and increases his - efficiency/' So young men, if you do not want to be thrown -off from the the throne of Success, be persevering, and then beauty and glory ia waiting in front of you! LIFE ON A FARM
By TH£AN PAK CHOON
Perhaps, it is most dramatic to live in a farm when we retired lather than in towns or cities. Despite its various disadvantages yet it is the beat. Quiet, healthy and enjoyable — though not in material sense, these have always been able to contribute a most domfortable and ideal life in the farm. There should be no doubt of fhts statement, for there are many a great man that had come out of tfie country and many are still seeking such sites, for residences.
I have always dreamt and planned to establish an Ideal farm for the evening of my life, to keep a small but tidy bungalow surrounded with shady trees of all kinds some that Vear beautiful flowers and some that produce dillclous fruits. There should be a flower garden in front and a moderate vegetable garden behind, and a pond to keep fishes I should make us of the rest for different crops at suitable seasons. The site I will choose wii be watered by lovely stream or river somewhere near a hill or jnoun-tain. Oh! what else can a£ford a better- life than this.
My great interest for farming was mainly aroused during the early pnrlod of the Japanese occupation, where, for the purpose of avoiding the Japs and their brutal administration, I was told to evacuate with my family to a remote village in Malacca. There, I started to .manage moderate farm and had good time out of It.' What a sweet memory is it to think of the past where I sat under the shade to fish in the lovely stream that helped to water the whole of my farm, t could only wish tliat I .may get back to it and dig up this piece of fertile land again.
To many persons farming seems a dirty job, but if they were to get the experience themselves, I trust everybody will certainly be much pleased and And it most enjoyable. There are spoHs and enjoyments besides work, as fishing, bunting, reading etc., and at time亀 one may travel to town for shows and other en joyments. There will be complete freedom and many a joy with all your faithful and devoted labourers, who will eventually take the farm to be their own. '
With the late invention of machinery, many great fawns have since turned to mass production with great areas of productive land. These have spoiled some funs and the dramas as in the old system, yet, there are' the same enjoyimenta and beauties in farming. Although a farmer's life is hard and difficult yet, he will be contented and And pleasure out of it. '
