Outdoor portrait of 2/30 Transport Platoon, Batu Pahat. The photograph was taken by Mah Lee, a Japanese spy, posing as a Chinese photographer. Mah Lee ran a photographic studio in Batu Pahat and Australian soldiers would visit the studio to have their photograph taken. Mah Lee would also visit the Australian camp at Batu Pahat, taking other Company and Platoon photographs, as well as other photographs of the camp, believed to be used by Japanese Intelligence as the camp was heavily bombed. Some Australian Prisoners of War (POWs) recognised Mah Lee who was now acting as an interpreter and wearing the uniform of a Captain in the Japanese Imperial Army.
